Omega-3 fatty acids are what's called essential fatty acids. We need them to help our bodies to work normally. Omega-3's are not made in the body so we need to get them from our diet.
There are several types of omega-3 fatty acids but the two really important ones are EPA and DHA. These are mainly found in fish (like salmon, tuna, mackerel, lake trout and anchovies). Plants like flax contain ALA, an omega-3 fatty acid that is partially converted into DHA and EPA in the body.
